“The art of the deal” – Negotiation secrets: the key to success in persuasion skills

Recently, the talk show “The Art of the Deal – Negotiation Secrets” welcomed over 400 students from various faculties and majors to engage with and learn from an experienced guest speaker in the fields of negotiation and persuasion – Mr. Phung Cong Dung, Former Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam–Cambodia Friendship Association (Term II, 2022–2023). MASTERTALK, a student group from the Faculty of International Relations and Communications at HUFLIT, organized the event.

Mr. Phung Cong Dung, a seasoned expert in foreign affairs and community diplomacy, brought a wealth of experience to the talk show. Holding a Master’s degree in Public Administration and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, he has served in key leadership roles, including as Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs. His work has contributed to strengthening economic and cultural cooperation, as well as fostering connections between universities and overseas Vietnamese intellectual communities.

His participation provided students with practical insights and valuable lessons in the art of negotiation, leaving a lasting impact and inspiring all 400 attendees.

Mr. Phung Cong Dung, a former Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam–Cambodia Friendship Association (Term II, 2022–2023), is a highly experienced figure in the fields of foreign affairs and engagement with the overseas Vietnamese community.

Holding a Master’s degree in Public Administration and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, he has served in various key leadership roles, including Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs. Throughout his career, he has made significant contributions to fostering economic and cultural cooperation, while also helping universities connect with the knowledge and expertise of overseas Vietnamese communities.

At the beginning of the talk show, Mr. Phung Cong Dung made a strong impression with his insightful and meaningful reflections on the art of negotiation. He started with a simple yet profound definition: “Negotiation is not just a professional skill for the workplace, but also a tool that helps us navigate everyday situations with tact and effectiveness.” With his relatable explanations, he helped students clearly understand the vital role negotiation plays in building consensus and achieving common goals.

Mr. Dung shared: “Negotiation is not about winning or losing – it’s about creating a harmonious outcome where all parties can gain what they value.” This statement provided students with a fresh perspective on negotiation, applicable not only to the workplace but also to daily life.

Mr. Phung Cong Dung continued to captivate the audience with vivid, real-life stories drawn from his own experiences, such as his efforts in advocating for the Vietnamese community in Cambodia and negotiating remittances from the U.S. during the pandemic. These stories not only inspired the students but also served as valuable lessons in persistence and strategic thinking to overcome challenges in negotiation.

Toward the end of his talk, Mr. Dung shared a series of practical tips-small details that carry significant weight in communication and negotiation, such as how to shake hands, offer gifts, give compliments at the right moment, or use eye contact skillfully.

“These details may seem simple, but they hold great power. They help build trust and lay the foundation for long-lasting relationships,” he noted. These essential skills empower students to feel more confident and handle communication and negotiation situations more effectively.

Through the talk show, Mr. Dung not only deepened students’ understanding of the art of negotiation but also equipped them with practical tools to prepare for their future careers and lives. The session proved to be a truly valuable opportunity for students to learn, apply knowledge in real-world contexts, and lay the groundwork for future success.

The program concluded with a lively Q&A session, where students eagerly raised questions related to negotiation, such as: “What is the most important negotiation skill that students should develop early on?” and “When is the right time to bring up specific requests, such as salary or benefits, without jeopardizing the negotiation outcome?”

Mr. Phung Cong Dung not only answered each question thoughtfully but also encouraged students to share their own perspectives and explore diverse approaches to specific negotiation scenarios.

This interactive session not only deepened students’ understanding of negotiation theories but also provided a valuable opportunity to sharpen their quick-thinking skills and real-world problem-solving abilities in a negotiation context. It equipped them with essential tools to face future challenges in both professional and personal settings confidently.
