HUFLIT FIR&C Students Explore the “Real-World Skills” of the Interpreting Profession through Insights from Alumni
Recently, HUFLIT’s Faculty of International Relations and Communication (FIR&C) organized a workshop titled “The Interpreting Profession – Real-World Skills,” featuring insights shared by the Faculty’s alumni and attracting strong participation from students.
The program offered students the opportunity to meet, interact, and learn directly from alumni who have achieved success in the professional interpreting field. Through these exchanges, participants gained a clearer understanding of career pathways, essential skills, and the mindset required to thrive in the industry.
Joining the workshop were Mr. Arius Nguyễn (Class of 2018), currently a Corporate Consultant & Interpreter at Phương Đông Translation & Interpretation Services (ELITA), and Ms. Mai Lan (Class of 2014), Assistant Public Relations Manager at Sheraton Saigon Grand Opera Hotel. Both are seasoned interpreters with extensive experience in conferences, exhibitions, and international events across various industries.
During the sharing session, the guest speakers offered students an in-depth look into their journey to becoming interpreters, highlighting the differences between translation and interpretation as well as the demanding requirements for language proficiency, subject knowledge, and adaptability. They also recounted real-life situations encountered in interpreting at conferences, courts, and international exhibitions, giving students a better understanding of the diversity and pressures of the profession.
Beyond sharing experiences, the workshop also created an open dialogue space where students raised questions about career directions, necessary certifications, and skill development while still in university. The guests’ enthusiasm and openness provided practical advice and encouragement, inspiring students to pursue this challenging yet rewarding career path.
The workshop “The Interpreting Profession – Real-World Skills” not only equipped students with essential knowledge and practical skills but also inspired HUFLITers to confidently pursue their journey toward becoming professional interpreters in the future.
At the end of the session, representatives from the Faculty extended their appreciation and presented souvenirs to the two guest speakers. Faculty members and students then captured memorable group photos, wrapping up an inspiring and meaningful morning.
