HUFLIT spreads the value of the Vietnamese language and enhances learning experiences through a student speech competition

In the journey of preserving and promoting national cultural identity in the era of globalization, students – the young generation – play a pioneering role. Through the speech contest “Vietnamese Language – A Bridge Between Heritage and Integration,” students not only express their perspectives, confidence, and individual voices but also engage in creating social value, enhancing academic experiences, and developing comprehensive skills.

To create an academic exchange space for the student community within the 21st competitive bloc, Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology (HUFLIT) organized the speech contest: “Vietnamese Language – A Bridge Between Heritage and Integration,” with the participation of six teams from HUFLIT; Saigon University of Technology (STU); Nguyen Tat Thanh University (NTTU); Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH); Van Lang University (VLU); and Hoa Sen University (HSU).

The competing teams at the speech contest: “Vietnamese Language - A Bridge Between Heritage and Integration”

With the theme “Vietnamese Language – A Bridge Between Heritage and Integration” this year’s contest offers students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the role of Vietnamese in preserving national identity, promoting cultural heritage, and fostering international integration. It also aims to enhance patriotic spirit, safeguard traditional cultural values, and call on students to take responsibility in promoting the Vietnamese language through usage that is culturally rich, effective, and suitable for the modern era.

The teams will compete across two rounds covering a variety of engaging topics, including:

  • Vietnamese – A Bridge to National Cultural Heritage: Highlighting the role of Vietnamese in preserving and transmitting historical, traditional, and cultural values.
  • Gen Z’s Use of Vietnamese: Examining how the younger generation uses Vietnamese today – from overuse of internet slang, mispronunciations, abbreviations, to creative adaptations in everyday language.

  • Vietnamese in the Digital Age: Opportunities and Challenges: Exploring the role of Vietnamese in technology, social media, and artificial intelligence while maintaining linguistic purity and standards in a modern context.

  • Vietnamese in Diplomacy and National Image Promotion: Analyzing the role of Vietnamese in connecting the international community, the Vietnamese diaspora, and presenting Vietnamese identity globally.

  • Language Interchange – Is Vietnamese Being “Diluted”?: Addressing the influx of foreign words and loanwords in Vietnamese, weighing their benefits and drawbacks.

  • Vietnamese in Creative Arts: Discussing the role of Vietnamese in art, content creation, and media – how the language can become a source of inspiration and soft power.

  • Young Students and the Responsibility to Preserve Vietnamese: Encouraging students to actively promote the value of Vietnamese through usage that is culturally rich, effective, and relevant to the modern era.

Memorable moments from the competition

With outstanding performance and a convincing presentation, the HUFLIT team excellently secured the First Prize. The Second Prize went to Hoa Sen University (HSU). Two Third Prizes were awarded to Nguyen Tat Thanh University (NTTU) and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH). Saigon University of Technology (STU) and Van Lang University (VLU) received Consolation Prizes.

Speaking at the event, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu – Vice Principal of HUFLIT- emphasized that the significance of the competition goes beyond its academic aspect, highlighting the responsibility of the younger generation towards their mother tongue. He affirmed that HUFLIT will continue to promote high-quality academic activities, aiming to spread cultural values while accompanying students on their journey of comprehensive development.

HUFLIT initiates a wide range of extracurricular activities, academic competitions, and diverse, practical events to enhance the learning experience for students, while providing opportunities and accompanying them on the journey of skill development and personal growth.

In particular, HUFLIT also offers early access to job and internship opportunities for students through an increasingly expanded network of corporate partners. Additionally, numerous scholarships covering 15% to 100% of full-course tuition are available, reflecting HUFLIT’s commitment to supporting students in their pursuit of knowledge. This debate competition further exemplifies HUFLIT’s holistic, humanistic, and identity-driven educational approach.
