During the process of formation and development, Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages - Information Technology (HUFLIT) has always considered international cooperation activities as an important task for improving the quality of teaching. Over the past two years, despite the complicated and prolonged developments of the Covid-19 pandemic, international cooperation and exchange have encountered many difficulties. The University has made efforts to move most of its activities online, both to create a new space for students suitable for current conditions and to prepare for future development steps after the pandemic is under control.

Since the outbreak of Covid-19, HUFLIT has continued to promote international programs despite the emergence of space barriers. Throughout 2020, HUFLIT has continued to implement its annual student exchange program , accepting 9 foreign students and sending 16 students to study at partner schools. At the same time, exchange, study and cultural experience programs for foreign students have also been successfully organized. Most notably, the ” Live & Learn” program for students of Kobe International University (Japan) and the 2-week Vietnamese cultural study and experience program for students of Teikyo University (Japan).

In October 2020, the HUFLIT IC2020 International Scientific Conference was held on October 16, 2020 with the theme “Ensuring high-quality human resources in modern times” and attracted the attention of many domestic and foreign scholars and researchers who reported directly and online. In addition, the seminar with the theme ” Japanese corporate culture” held annually at HUFLIT by Prof. Fumio Okita – a business speaker from Japan has been flexibly converted to online format in response to the developments of the epidemic. It can be said that a series of international seminars and conferences in both direct and online forms have been promoted by HUFLIT with the purpose of learning, exchanging and promoting the image of the school.

By 2021, as pandemic prevention measures are tightened, international exchange and collaboration activities will face more difficulties. Although this is a huge challenge, it is the right time to prepare for the School’s next long-term plan: international training and joint programs.

International training cooperation program – Long-term strategy during the epidemic season

During the past 3 months, especially during the period when Ho Chi Minh City applied social distancing under the direction of the Chairman of the City People’s Committee, Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages - Information Technology has continuously organized online meetings with prestigious universities in the region and around the world such as Yeungnam University (Korea), Deakin University, Griffith University (Australia) or Algonquin College (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), … to discuss and expand cooperation possibilities.

In addition to the familiar student exchange activities, to create more opportunities for international learning experiences for students, HUFLIT shares the desire to implement transfer programs, joint training according to the 2+2, 3+1, 4+0 and 3+2 models.

For the 2+2 or 3+1 program applied with partners Griffith, Deakin, Algonquin or Yeungnam, after studying the first 2-3 years at HUFLIT, students can transfer credits and continue studying at the partner school with a study period of 2 or 1 year to be awarded an international bachelor’s degree.

In particular, in the 3+1+1 program applied to a number of training majors such as Business Administration, Accounting – Finance, Tourism – Hospitality or Information Technology, after studying for 3 years at HUFLIT, students will transfer to partner schools to continue studying for 1 to 2 years to obtain a Bachelor’s degree from HUFLIT and receive a Graduated Certificate at Algonquin College or a Master’s degree at Deakin, Griffith.

The consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic are unpredictable, studying in your country may have certain difficulties. Therefore, the School also discussed with partners about moving towards building 4+0 programs or establishing a Micro-campus model at HUFLIT. This can be considered a form of experiencing an education with international standards in Vietnam when students study for 4 years at HUFLIT but with a curriculum “imported” from foreign partners and a team of internationally qualified lecturers.

Notably, the transfer program at Yeungnam University (Korea) offers opportunities for students studying in all faculties of HUFLIT, especially Korean Studies, Oriental Languages and Cultures with interesting majors such as Korean Pedagogy (teaching Korean to foreigners) or Translation and Interpretation. Especially for Korean Pedagogy: after graduation, students will also receive a certificate in Korean teaching methods issued by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea.

For students who do not have enough foreign language skills, all partner schools have language enhancement programs so that students can study intensively to get foreign language certificates in the shortest time. This program not only helps students improve their foreign language skills, but also helps students learn learning methods in other countries, creating a “buffer” period for them to get used to the new environment, making learning much more effective when entering the main course.

Students who are currently studying and about to study at HUFLIT are all in the target group of these international programs. Not only can they experience international learning, students after participating in the transfer program and graduating from the partner school also have the opportunity to stay, work and settle in their home country. In addition, although the partner schools are among the top quality schools, they all have very affordable tuition fees and are especially committed to giving tuition incentives to HUFLIT students.

[CONCLUSION] Determining the role and position of the earliest established non-public university in Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology always strives every day, diversifying cooperation activities and taking advantage of all resources during the epidemic season to create a truly dynamic, creative, international-standard learning and research environment all for the beloved students. As a HUFLIT student with the opportunity to experience all these interesting things, why not?
