From HUFLIT lecture hall to first job: Pham Tran Phu Dat’s journey to conquer his “Starter Dream”
“Starter” is a familiar name for employees working at VNG Corporation. And the dream of becoming a “starter” has been cherished by Pham Tran Phu Dat, a former student of K24, Business Administration (QTKD) – Marketing major at HUFLIT since his final years of university.
Currently, Phu Dat has officially become a Partnership Operation at Zalo (belonging to VNG Corporation), writing an inspirational story about perseverance and effort.

Official “Starter” at VNG: Turn dreams into reality
Recognized as “the best place to work in Vietnam” in 2023 with modern facilities, VNG has been Phu Dat’s dream destination since he was in college.
However, the journey to reach that dream was not smooth. After graduating, like many other young people, Dat went through many job positions – from Marketing intern to student care staff at an English center. The most memorable turning point came at the end of 2022, when he received an interview invitation from Zalo even though he was still a senior student. “I didn’t pass, but that interview helped me understand the recruitment process, culture and skills that Zalo is looking for”.
Since then, Dat has persistently trained himself, proactively learned and accumulated experience. Nearly two years later, he confidently returned, passed the selection round and officially became a part of the Zalo family in 2024.
Here, Phu Dat is taking on two main roles in the Partnership Operation department, in charge of supporting content creators and businesses that need to build channels on the short video platform Zalo Video; at the same time, directly participating in internal operations, from receiving and handling arising technical issues, to processing data on tools such as Excel or Power BI.

Ready and confident to enter the technology environment thanks to the platform from HUFLIT
With its strengths in foreign languages and information technology, HUFLIT provides a solid foundation of practical knowledge and soft skills, helping students confidently enter the job market. Looking back on his time studying at HUFLIT, Phu Dat said he was fully equipped with the necessary skills for his current job: “From communication, negotiation, project management, foreign languages and teamwork through subjects such as Business Communication & Negotiation, Project Management, and essays that need to be done in groups. In particular, HUFLIT is a foreign language school, so I had the opportunity to study a major in English, which is a great advantage for HUFLIT students after graduation” Phu Dat shared.

For Phu Dat, HUFLIT is the place that helped him build the foundation of knowledge and soft skills necessary to take on the role of Partnership Operation at Zalo. “From communication, negotiation, project management to teamwork and foreign language use – all are trained through courses such as Business Communication & Negotiation, Project Management and group exercises ”.
One of the most memorable and influential memories for Dat was when he became an Admissions Collaborator at HUFLIT in his third year of university. “At that time, I was still a student without any practical work experience, but when I joined the collaboration, Ms. Tra My (Admissions Specialist) shared and enthusiastically guided me in my work. I have applied the knowledge and experience she imparted to my work since my intern days, even up to my current working time, helping me to be confident in my work .”
The dynamism and foreign language environment are what particularly impressed Dat about HUFLIT. “Here, students are encouraged to participate in projects, clubs, exchange activities and confidently use foreign languages every day – from English, Korean to Japanese. Even when meeting lecturers, you can still comfortably converse in foreign languages without any barriers, ” Phu Dat shared.

Study seriously, persistently pursue your dreams
Sending a message to HUFLIT students, a former student of Business Administration shared practical lessons learned from his own journey of growing up. Phu Dat believes that in order to confidently enter the competitive technology environment, students need to prepare seriously right from the lecture hall.
Phu Dat especially appreciates the practicality of the training program at HUFLIT, especially at the Faculty of Business Administration. According to Dat, the projects, group exercises and teaching content are all closely related to the actual profession, helping students quickly practice essential skills such as communication, leadership and teamwork. “Be serious with each subject, because that is the foundation for you to quickly adapt to future work,” Phu Dat shared.
In addition to learning attitude, Phu Dat encourages students to proactively do internships early, ideally at the end of their third year. This is the right time for students to realize their strengths and weaknesses, thereby having a clear direction before officially entering the labor market. “By the time you graduate, you will understand what you want and be more confident when applying,” Phu Dat said.
Phu Dat also emphasized the importance of taking advantage of the existing strengths at HUFLIT, which are foreign language and information technology platforms. Phu Dat called these “ two tools to help students stand out in the eyes of employers ” and advised young people to start cultivating from their first year to quickly master this advantage.
Finally, Phu Dat encourages students to actively “collision” with reality through opportunities right at school such as applying for collaborators, participating in job fairs or business tours. According to Phu Dat, “These experiences will help you not be confused, but much more confident when stepping into the real working environment.“
Phu Dat also did not forget to express his deep gratitude to HUFLIT: “I am truly grateful and appreciate the 4 years of studying at HUFLIT, which helped me change from a shy student to an active one, from someone who was “afraid of interviews” to boldly apply to the leading corporations in Vietnam. Thank you to all the teachers of the Faculty of Business Administration, course 2018-2022 for always being dedicated, and the teachers at the Training Department, Admissions Department, and Business Relations Department for creating conditions for me to be a collaborator, approaching the real environment right from when I was still in the classroom.”
Pham Tran Phu Dat’s story is a vivid proof that HUFLIT is not only a place to impart knowledge but also a solid launching pad, helping students develop skills, confidence and proactive spirit to conquer successful careers at leading technology corporations in Vietnam.
Stories and experiences like Phu Dat’s will motivate HUFLIT students in particular and young people pursuing their career journey in general. Not everyone has a perfect start, but seriousness in studying, proactive spirit and readiness to face challenges will be valuable assets for each person to be more steadfast on their career path.
