Recently, students from the Faculty of International Relations & Communication at HUFLIT participated in a field study visit to Ho Chi Minh City Television (HTV), gaining first-hand insight into how a television broadcaster operates—from content production workflows to the behind-the-scenes efforts that sustain each broadcast slot.

Organized through collaboration between HUFLIT’s Faculty of International Relations & Communication and HTV, the program offered students access to a large-scale, professional broadcasting environment operating under modern transmission standards. Beyond practical academic knowledge, the visit helped students visualize multi-platform media processes amid the rapid transformation of journalism and television today.

At the outset, students were introduced to HTV’s functions, missions, and organizational structure as one of Ho Chi Minh City’s key media institutions. These briefings clarified the broadcaster’s role in contemporary media—not only delivering information but also shaping public discourse while developing educational and entertainment content for the public.

During professional briefings, HUFLITers learned how programs are prepared, how news is edited to ensure accuracy, and why live television production demands second-by-second coordination. This overview provided a clear picture of the rigorous operational processes behind a professional television station.

A highlight of the visit was students’ exposure to specialized technical vehicles such as OB Vans (Outside Broadcast Vans), SNG Vans (Satellite News Gathering Vans), and the MCR Mobile Unit—essential tools for live production and transmission. These units handle color correction, audio mixing, and signal monitoring prior to broadcast. Though compact, the workspaces are efficiently designed and fully equipped, allowing students to witness how technical teams monitor visuals, manage contingencies, and maintain signal stability—critical tasks that directly affect on-air quality.

Students observed post-production processes and activities inside the studio.

In the post-production area, students observed editing workflows including video and audio editing, color grading, and motion graphics. Each frame and sound layer is meticulously refined under tight deadlines and high accuracy standards, underscoring the intensive labor behind even a few minutes of broadcast content.

The tour continued in the studios, where students were introduced to camera systems, lighting setups, control rooms, and cross-department coordination. From camera placement and lighting intensity to prop arrangement, every detail illustrated why studios must follow strict procedures to ensure broadcast-ready visuals.

Students were introduced to and practiced image color grading techniques..

One of the most engaging segments was the chroma key (green screen) experience. Standing before the green backdrop, students watched real-time compositing on monitors as virtual environments replaced the physical background—revealing how television constructs immersive settings for news, weather, and entertainment. Several students also tried on-camera presenting, practicing eye-line to the lens, natural delivery, and coordination with the teleprompter—an exciting yet demanding experience that offered authentic insight into on-air professionalism.

The visit concluded on a high note, with students reflecting on the pressures, precision, and responsibility inherent in television work. Recognizing that every on-air image results from seamless collaboration across teams, the HTV experience proved more than a tour—it became a meaningful professional stepping stone, inspiring students to clarify career directions and deepen their passion for media and journalism.
