Soft Skills Seminar: “What is Multi-Level Marketing? Identifying MLM Scams for Students”
On July 27, 2023, nearly 500 students gathered at the 6th Floor Auditorium, HUFLIT’s Su Van Hanh Campus, for a highly informative and engaging soft skills seminar titled “What is Multi-Level Marketing? Identifying MLM Scams for Students.” This event was part of HUFLIT’s ongoing efforts to prepare students with practical knowledge and critical skills to navigate the complexities of the professional world and protect themselves from unethical business practices.
The seminar was led by M.A. Tran Thanh Tu, a respected lecturer from the Faculty of Foreign Languages, who brought clarity to the often-misunderstood world of multi-level marketing (MLM). With years of expertise in education and skill development, M.A. Tu provided in-depth insights into the MLM business model—a legitimate structure frequently exploited by fraudulent schemes. He emphasized the importance of distinguishing between ethical MLM operations and deceptive practices designed to prey on individuals, particularly young and inexperienced professionals.

The seminar began with a comprehensive explanation of the fundamentals of MLM, highlighting how it can be a legitimate business model when conducted transparently and ethically. However, the focus quickly shifted to the red flags of fraudulent MLM schemes, which often lure participants with promises of quick wealth, high returns, and minimal effort. M.A. Tu shared examples of real-world scams to help students recognize these warning signs and avoid falling victim to them.
A significant portion of the seminar was dedicated to analyzing the common tactics used by fraudulent MLMs, such as pyramid schemes disguised as legitimate businesses. M.A. Tu provided practical tools for evaluating business opportunities, including critical questions to ask during recruitment pitches, steps to verify the legitimacy of companies, and the use of legal resources to assess business operations. Students were encouraged to adopt a skeptical and informed approach, enabling them to make better decisions when confronted with enticing but dubious offers.
In addition to theoretical knowledge, the seminar offered practical advice and actionable steps for students to safeguard their interests. M.A. Tu emphasized the importance of developing critical thinking and research skills to thoroughly evaluate opportunities before committing to them. He also stressed the role of self-awareness and confidence in resisting pressure from aggressive recruiters who target vulnerable individuals.
The interactive segment of the seminar allowed students to ask questions, share personal experiences, and seek advice on navigating similar challenges. Many students expressed gratitude for the clarity and guidance provided, noting how the seminar empowered them to identify and avoid scams confidently.

The event not only enhanced students’ understanding of MLM and its potential risks but also contributed significantly to their overall personal and professional development. By equipping attendees with the tools to critically analyze business offers, HUFLIT continues to foster a generation of informed and resilient graduates who are well-prepared to face real-world challenges.
The seminar was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from students, who praised the relevance and practicality of the content. It reaffirmed HUFLIT’s dedication to providing a holistic education that goes beyond academic learning, focusing on essential life skills and ethical awareness. Events like “What is Multi-Level Marketing? Identifying MLM Scams for Students” highlight HUFLIT’s commitment to creating a safer, more knowledgeable community while preparing students for successful and responsible professional lives.
