Should You Study Chinese or Japanese? A-Z Analysis
Should you study Chinese or Japanese? An overview comparison
Whether to study Chinese or Japanese is always a big question for many young people when choosing a second language to study. To answer, first you need to clearly understand the difference between Chinese and Japanese in terms of popularity, formation history and how these two languages relate to each other.
Popularity and the number of users in the world
Mandarin Chinese currently has about more than 1 billion users, becoming the most spoken language in the world and having outstanding popularity. Meanwhile, Japanese has about 125 – 130 million speakers, forming a user community concentrated mainly in Japan.
Although smaller in scale, Japanese still maintains great influence thanks to a strong economy and wide cultural coverage. Therefore, in terms of global popularity, Chinese takes the advantage, while Japanese stands out for its economic value and distinct identity.
A brief overview of the origin and relationship between the two languages
Japanese borrowed Chinese characters from Chinese and formed the Kanji system, helping learners notice many similarities in vocabulary. This explains why some Japanese words are easily associated with their original Chinese meaning.
However, Japanese also developed two separate writing systems, Hiragana and Katakana, while also having independent grammar. Thanks to this, although it has a historical connection with Chinese, the structure and operation of the two languages are still completely different.

Analysing difficulty: Is studying Chinese or Japanese harder?
Whether to study Chinese or Japanese is a common question when choosing a second language, because each language has its own challenges. Comparing the difficulty of Chinese and the difficulty of Japanese will help you assess your accessibility and choose according to your study goals, work and personal interests.
About the writing system (The characters)
Chinese uses only one Chinese character system with about 3,000–5,000 common characters, hard to remember at first but once familiar it helps reading comprehension easily. Learners can practise daily to memorise and recognise characters faster.
Japanese uses three writing systems: Kanji (borrowed from China), Hiragana (soft script) and Katakana (hard script), creating a more complex system. However, the Hiragana system is quite easy to learn, helping beginners get acquainted quickly with Japanese writing.
Should you study Chinese or Japanese? About pronunciation (Listening – Speaking)
Chinese has Chinese tones with 4 basic tones, similar to Vietnamese, so Vietnamese people have an advantage when learning. However, mispronouncing the tone in Chinese will change the meaning, requiring careful practice. Japanese has no tones; the vowels and consonants are simple and easy to pronounce, helping beginners quickly listen and speak basically. Thanks to this, Japanese pronunciation is initially more accessible than Chinese.
About grammar
Chinese has Chinese grammar quite close to Vietnamese, following the S – V – O order, with no verb conjugation and no masculine/feminine distinction, helping learners access it easily. Conversely, Japanese has Japanese grammar following the S – O – V order, with a complex particle system and verb conjugation in many forms, making learning and applying Japanese sentence structure significantly harder.
