Job description of a risk management specialist

The work of a risk management specialist is very diverse. This profession requires a combination of analytical thinking, in-depth industry understanding and effective communication ability.

Setting up a suitable risk-management system

The specialist needs to build a risk-management framework suited to the enterprise’s particularities, including: establishing risk-management policies and processes; identifying the main types of risk the enterprise is facing. In addition, defining the acceptable risk level; building a risk matrix to classify and prioritise handling.

They also need to research and apply advanced risk-management methods such as VaR (Value at Risk), stress testing, scenario analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, and so on. This requires deep knowledge of mathematics, statistics, finance and information technology.

Implementing and supervising risk-control plans

After setting up the system, the specialist must deploy specific control measures. For credit risk, they build and monitor a credit scoring model, set credit limits and require collateral. For operational risk, they design internal-control processes, clear authorisation and cross-checking.

The specialist must monitor the main risk indicators and early detect abnormal signs. For example, a sudden spike in the bad-debt ratio, a high increase in the number of abnormal transactions, or a surge in customer complaints are all signals that need immediate investigation and handling.

Coordinating with departments to handle arising risks

Risk management is not the work of a single department but requires close coordination from the whole organisation. The risk management specialist must work with many different departments:

  • Business/credit department: Advising on the risks of transactions, customers and new products; approving or rejecting high-risk proposals.
  • Legal/compliance department: Ensuring that risk-management measures comply with legal regulations and industry standards.
  • IT department: Coordinating to build warning systems and risk-management software, ensuring information security.
  • Internal audit department: Providing information and supporting the evaluation of the effectiveness of the internal-control system.

Compiling and reporting the situation and progress to superiors

Periodic reporting is an important duty for the leadership to grasp the overall risk situation. The specialist must make reports such as: credit-risk report (loan-portfolio quality, bad debt, group-2 debt, provision), market-risk report (VaR, stress test results). In addition, you also need to make an operational-risk report (number of errors, fraud, losses) and a compliance report (violations, recommendations from inspection).
