[Admissions – Career Guidance 2026] Which Major Should Gen Z Study to Work in E-Commerce?
How many job positions are there in e-commerce?
E-commerce is not simply selling online. It is a vast ecosystem with many different groups of roles:
- Operations – business: managing storefronts on e-commerce platforms, running websites, processing orders, customer care, and so on.
- Marketing – content: digital marketing, multi-platform advertising, content creation, video shooting and editing, live-stream selling, and so on.
- Technology – data: website administration, user data analysis, optimising the customer experience.
- Logistics – supply chain: warehouse and transport management, delivery, optimising shipping costs, and so on.
This diversity makes e-commerce a field that “opens the door” to many different kinds of ability, and it suits dynamic, quick-thinking, technology-loving Gen Z particularly well. It is easy to see that anyone with the right capabilities can find a position and a role in e-commerce. Before looking at which major to study in order to work in this appealing field, let us look at what the E-Commerce major covers and teaches in the next section.
What is the E-Commerce major?
E-Commerce is a major within the economics group that combines business with digital technology to help businesses carry out buying, selling, marketing and transactions online.
Students in this field engage with areas of knowledge such as:
- Managing and running websites and e-commerce platforms.
- Content marketing, digital marketing and brand building, and so on.
- Logistics and supply chain management.
- Analysis of customer data and consumer behaviour.
The defining features of e-commerce are its high applicability and its ability to adapt quickly to market change.
Which major should you study to work in e-commerce?
To work and grow over the long term in e-commerce, Gen Z might consider the following majors:
- E-Commerce: the most direct and comprehensive route, suited to platform operations, digital business and online platform management roles.
- Marketing / Digital Marketing: suited to those who enjoy content creation, advertising, live-streaming and brand building on digital platforms.
- Business Administration: provides a foundation in management and operations, suited to those aiming for managerial positions or an online start-up.
- Information Technology / Management Information Systems: suited to the technical and data side, and to optimising e-commerce systems.
- Logistics & Supply Chain Management / International Business: an important choice as the growth of e-commerce drives demand for delivery, warehousing, trade and international business.
Among these, E-Commerce remains the choice that “goes straight to the point” for Gen Z who want to study the right major and work in the right profession within the digital economy.
Forecasts suggest that by 2030 Vietnam’s labour market will see an explosion in fields related to technology and the digital economy.
