The “Cultural diplomacy & consular affairs – Practical experience” seminar – enhancing real-world experiences for the FIR students
On the morning of April 11th, 2023, the Faculty of International Relations at HUFLIT (FIR) organized a special lecture entitled “Cultural diplomacy & consular affairs – Practical experience” to enhance knowledge and real-world experiences for students through the insights shared by Mr. Mai Anh Thai from the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs.
In the context of globalization, cultural diplomacy is considered one of the three pillars closely associated with the task of expanding and promoting the nation’s image on the international stage. Cultural diplomacy, alongside political and economic diplomacy, plays a significant role in fostering cooperation between nations through cultural exchanges and promoting the image of the country and its people to the world. Additionally, consular affairs play an important role in ensuring peace, stability, and development for countries and the international community.
Recognizing the potential benefits for students, the Faculty of International Relations (FIR) at HUFLIT organized the special lecture “Cultural diplomacy & consular affairs – Practical experience”, providing more opportunities for students to engage in cultural diplomacy and consular activities in practical settings.
Accompanying the students in this seminar was Mr. Mai Anh Thai, Director of the Center for Foreign Affairs and Language Training (CEFALT) under the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam. Mr. Mai Anh Thai has held various positions in the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs, such as Deputy Head of the Reception Department, Deputy Chief of the Office, Secretary to the Director, and Deputy Director of the Foreign Service Center (FSC). Through his involvement in foreign affairs activities, he actively supported the promotion of local culture to international friends and boosted trade, investment, and tourism activities for Vietnam.
As the Third Secretary at the Embassy of Vietnam in Tanzania from 2013 to 2016, he was also responsible for consular affairs, diplomatic reception, and organizing numerous working visits for Vietnamese delegations abroad. With 16 years of experience in foreign affairs activities, Mr. Mai Anh Thai brought valuable information to the students regarding cultural diplomacy and consular work from his practical experience.
As in the seminar, students raised various questions and concerns related to cultural diplomacy as well as the necessary skills and knowledge to participate in diplomatic activities. Mr. Mai Anh Thai not only provided enthusiastic guidance to help students prepare for a professional diplomatic career but also offered encouragement for them to strive in their studies and skills development to contribute to Vietnam’s diplomatic activities.
With the incredibly interesting and informative insights from the speaker at the special seminar named “Cultural diplomacy & consular affairs – Practical experience”, the organizers hope that students have gained a deeper understanding of cultural diplomacy and consular affairs, and they are inspired to pursue their studies and hone their expertise to meet the demands and personal capacity for future career opportunities.
